For an outdoor space, consider the house, paving and garden as one setting. Repeating a stone on several column bases can tie separate features together. Keeping the palette restrained lets planting and furniture remain part of the composition.

Column proportions and corner details
Choose how high the stone should run and how it will meet the surface above. A cap, exposed edge or transition to another material should be planned before the cladding begins. On a small column, the size of individual stones and the corner arrangement are especially visible.
Photograph all sides of the column, not just the front. Include its base, top and nearby paving. These views help explain the shape, access and transitions that a single photo can miss.
Outdoor exposure matters
Exterior cladding needs an approach suited to the selected product, existing assembly and exposure. Water management, terminations and the condition of the backing must be reviewed as part of that approach. Stone is a finish; it is not a substitute for the wall’s weather protection.
