Two stone veneer projects with the same surface area can require very different amounts of work. A useful estimate describes the surface, material and finishing details, not just a price per square foot.
1. The actual area and shape
Width and height are a starting point. Outside corners, returns, narrow strips and openings affect the layout and cutting involved. A simple flat wall and a group of columns should not be compared by area alone.
When requesting an estimate, include all the faces you want covered. Photos help identify edges or returns that may be easy to miss when measuring the front.
2. The condition underneath
Removal of an existing finish, repairs and preparation can change the scope. The installation system needs to suit both the backing and the selected stone. A photo can begin the conversation, but concealed conditions may require an on-site review.
3. The selected stone and layout
Compare the exact product rather than a broad label such as “natural stone.” Dimensions, thickness, matching corners, availability and delivery all affect planning. Sorting an irregular blend and creating a particular joint pattern may require different work from arranging a more regular product.
4. Height, access and protection
A tall fireplace wall, a narrow entry or an occupied living room each presents different access needs. Discuss where materials can be delivered and stored, how the work area will be reached, and what nearby surfaces need protection.
5. The finishing details
Caps, exposed edges, mantel transitions, outlets and cleanup belong in the scope. Confirm who supplies the material and whether removal, disposal and any related work are included. If another trade is needed, identify that work separately.
Compare estimates on the same basis
- Does each estimate cover the same measured surfaces?
- Is the exact material and intended joint finish identified?
- Are preparation, corners and edge details described?
- Are delivery, cleanup and exclusions clear?
- How will unexpected conditions or scope changes be discussed?
